Thrush / Vaginal Candidiasis
Vaginal candidiasis, also known as thrush is a very common complaint. Thrush can occur in both men and women, although men rarely are symptomatic, except in severe cases.
Thrush is caused by an overload of the fungus candida in the vagina, which leads to infection, causing itchiness and discomfort.
Symptoms of thrush can include:
- Itching of the inner and outer vagina
- Soreness of the vulva
- Painful intercourse
- Pain on urination
- Creamy, thick discharge
- Odourous discharge, usually with a musty or vinegary odour
Candida is an organism that is naturally present in the vagina and digestive system, however when imbalances occur, candida numbers can become high and lead to thrush. Studies have shown that when thrush is present there is more than likely a systemic candida overgrowth. This can cause symptoms such as bloating, indigestion, excess gas and irregular bowel movements.
Other signs that you may have a systemic overload of candida are emotional instability, feeling teary easily and other fungal infections such as pitiryasis (white patches on the skin), tinea and onchomyosis (fungal nail infection).
Some common causes of candida overgrowth include:
- Antibiotic use
- Diet high in sugar or simple carbohydrates
- Depleted immune system
- Diet low in fibre
- Stress
There are some triggers to thrush including:
- Antibiotics
- Polyester or tight fitting underwear
- Changes in vaginal acidity due to menstrual changes
- Hot weather
- Intercourse
- Tampons
- Hot weather
- Pregnancy
- Stress
It is important to note that thrush is transmitted between partners, so even if you are being treated, you could be getting reinfected by your spouse. Treatment for both partners is therefore recommended for best results.
Naturopathic treatment of thrush
Treatment of thrush using naturopathy is very effective, as it involves both internal and external treatments. Katherine may make you herbal pessaries which are healing and soothing, while also giving you herbs to take internally to reduce candida numbers and improve your immune system function.
Relief of symptoms are usually felt within the first week of treatment. The benefit of using naturopathic treatment is that unlike conventional treatments such as canesten that are simply antifungal, naturopathy aims to bring the fungal balance back in the body, normalising gut flora and improving your immune system so that re-occurance of the candida is reduced.
Thrush and infertility
Candida overgrowth can have a detrimental effect on your reproductive system, preventing embryos from implanting due to the inflammation it causes. Studies have shown the the heads of sperm actually get stuck to the candida, stopping them in their journey towards the fallopian tubes. Anticandida treatment is therefore essential before attempting pregnancy.
